Microsoft has inadvertently spilled the beans its upcoming Surface RT. The new tablet briefly appeared on the Microsoft Store and the listings more or less confirmed earlier pricing rumours, but they were yanked by Microsoft.
The entry level version, with 32GB of storage and no Touch Cover keyboard ends up with a $ 499 price tag. An $ 599 will buy you a 64GB unit, or a 32GB unit bundled with the keyboard. So, the priciest model, with 64GB of storage and a bundled Touch Cover ends up at $ 699.
Sold separately, the Touch Cover is priced at $ 119, while the black Surface Type Cover, with proper hardware keys, is priced at $ 129. This sounds a bit too steep and very close to what Asus is asking for its Transformer keyboards, which also feature a battery, USB and SD slot.
So, the pricing is pretty much in line with entry level iPad versions, but we’re not sure that makes the Surface RT very competitive. The iPad boasts an unmatched ecosystem and a high-definition Retina screen, while the Surface features a 1366×768 screen and a completely new OS with a limited choice of apps.
Let’s hope we’re not looking at Microsoft’s next Zune. [Or Kin. Ed]
