iPhone 5S: Possible anodized colors

In an interesting but not entirely unexpected twist, Apple’s China supply chain is indicating that the iPhone 5S (or iPhone 6) will come in a range of screen sizes and colors. The same sources also indicate that production of the new iPhone 5S will begin in March/April, with an expected release date of May/June.

While a choice of colors would obviously be in stark contrast to every iPhone thus far — you can have any color, as long as it’s black (or white) — such a move isn’t exactly unprecedented. Apple has provided colorful iPod Minis, Nanos, and Shuffles for years, and last year it finally added a dash of color to the iPod Touch range. The iPod Touch, as you know, is basically an iPhone but without the cellular radio. At this point we have no idea what colors the iPhone 5S will be available in, but as you can see in the (example) image above, the anodized design of the iPhone 5/5S could enable some very striking designs.

iPhone 5, scuffed along the edgeThe two-different-screen-sizes tidbit is a little harder to get your head around. According to Brian White, an analyst at Topeka Capital Markets who cites Chinese supply chain connections, the iPhone 5S will have two screen sizes — though he doesn’t elaborate on what those screen sizes will be. We could try to guess, but there’s really no way to predict which way Apple will go on this one. It’s entirely possible that Apple is experiencing some kind of Napoleon complex/small man syndrome, and is thus readying a wider iPhone 5S that can compete with the latest Android superphones. Apple wouldn’t have to change the resolution of the larger-screen iPhone 5S — the pixels (or the pixel pitch) would just be a little bit larger. App compatibility would be unaffected.

If these rumors/reports are true, it paints a confused and floundering picture of Apple. There is no doubt that one of the iPhone’s strongest strengths is its branding — and introducing a range of colors and screen sizes would seriously water down that brand. It wouldn’t quite be as bad as Samsung with its myriad of Galaxy phones, but it would certainly hamper the iconic, archetypal idealism that Apple has built up around the iPhone.

Maybe, though, this is exactly what Apple needs to regain its relevancy in the smartphone market. It’s clear at this point that the iPhone has peaked — and if Apple doesn’t do something quickly, the breakneck pace of technological innovation will ensure the iPhone’s quick and painless swan dive into obscurity. The question, though, is whether a range of colors and screen sizes is really enough to secure the iPhone’s continued relevance. Personally, I think I’d rather see an iPhone that actually gains technological superiority over the latest Nokia and Samsung phones, rather than iPhone 5S: also available in pink.
