Teaser disappointing
Nintendo showed off its Switch yesterday, which was supposed to be a hybrid between a home console and a portable gaming system.
While trailer did a good job of showing off the machine, the majority of viewers and shareholders were not impressed. In fact, the Switch looks like it is not going to replace the 3DS but then again Nintendo never really said it would.
According to Nintendo, the Switch will be a home gaming system. “Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost. We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS.”
However Takeshi Koyama, a senior analyst at Mizuho Securities pointed out that the Switch was pretty much a yawn.
“The trailer does not show the device being played in interesting new ways, gameplay looks to be surprisingly similar to gaming with any number of other consoles.”
Eiji Maeda, an analyst at SMBC Nikko Securities adds that while the games demonstrated will appeal to existing Nintendo fans, there was nothing new that was shown off that could be considered groundbreaking.
Shareholders agreed and Nintendo’s share price fell by six percent.
