What are your thoughts on the 13 Reasons Why controversy?
Once every so often, a Netflix series will take over our whole entire lives.
And so, we’ve been *entirely* wrapped up in 13 Reasons Why for the best part of this month. Yup, living and breathing for the show.
And whilst we think the show opens a very important conversation within mainstream media- it being centred around a teen suicide and the events leading up to this- a great deal of people have found the series somewhat controversial.
The show handles some very difficult subjects, and has sparked a few debates amongst mental health charities over whether or not these subjects have been handled correctly.
The show’s co-producer, Selena Gomez, has now spoken out about the controversy surrounding the show- sharing that she had expected the controversy.

Speaking to Associate Press, Selena shares: ‘We wanted to do it justice….It’s not an easy subject to talk about, but I’m very fortunate with how it’s doing’.
After describing the show as ‘a beautifully tragic, complicated yet suspenseful story’, Selena then added she had accepted the controversy- sharing that she was ‘not surprised’ that the show had attracted a backlash.
Selena had also shared that they had hoped for the show to be produced ‘in a way that kids would be frightened, but confused – in a way that they would talk about it because it’s something that’s happening all the time’.
24-year-old Selena has been very open within the media over her own battles with mental health issues.
In fact, last year the singer had decided to take some time off from Celeb duties after falling ill with Lupus.
The star shared that she had ‘discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of Lupus’ adding, ‘I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off’.
It’s great that Selena is opening up such an important conversation.
