Serum is great (and very popular), but quite often you should consider reaching for an analog modeled synth instead. Serum is a Wave Table synth. It can emulate Analog Synths but it takes quite a bit of settings and work to pull it off. Where as an analog styled synth plugin will immediately have that vibe without any effort. I recommend to start out with Analog style. Then only if you can't achieve what you are imagining, then reach for something more futuristic like Serum or Massive etc. Some of my favorite analog synth plugins are Diva, and the Arturia V collection.
