Centre for Public Integrity says government’s $560m grant scheme ripe for ‘pork barrelling’

The Centre for Public Integrity has raised concerns that a $560m invitation-only grant program established by the Albanese government is ripe for pork-barrelling

When election promises are channelled through grants without open or transparent eligibility criteria, the distinction between policy delivery and political patronage becomes blurred.

Both major parties have used such mechanisms in the past – including through the community development grants program and Building Better regions fund – to direct taxpayer money toward electorally advantageous projects.

Dreame’s X40 Ultra is arguably the best robovac deal you can grab for Black Friday

    Dreame’s X40 Ultra against a wall.
Dreame’s X40 Ultra is over half off for Black Friday.

Robot vacuums show up in our gift guides almost every year, and it’s easy to understand why: they clean, they save time, and they’re cheaper than hiring a professional. But not all robovacs are created equal, and some save more time than others. The Dreame X40 Ultra is one of those, offering a more genuinely hands-free cleaning experience than what you typically get. And now through December 1st, it’s down to a new low of $499.99 ($700 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and directly from Dreame.

    Dreame X40 Ultra

    Where to Buy:

    • $1199.99 $499.99 at Amazon
    • $1199.99 $499.99 at Dreame
    • $1199.99 $499.99 at Best Buy

If you’re looking for a great robot vacuum that also does a fantastic job of mopping, the last-gen X40 Ultra is one of the best we’ve tested. With 12,000Pa of suction power, it does a great job of sucking up dirt and debris. It even comes with AI-powered smart dirt detection, which uses onboard cameras to spot particularly dirty areas, then slows down and passes over them multiple times until they’re thoroughly cleaned.

Its dual oscillating mop pads also do a fantastic job on hardwood floors, even extending into edges and under cabinets. It can also automatically detach and reattach its mop pads when switching to vacuuming, so your carpets stay dry. In fact, it repeats this process multiple times throughout a cleaning cycle to ensure carpets are vacuumed and hard floors are mopped properly.

What’s more, the robovac doesn’t require much babysitting; it maps rooms effectively, and its AI-assisted obstacle avoidance navigates around larger items like shoes with ease. Plus, the X40 Ultra can empty its own dustbin, refill its water tank, and clean its washboard — and its mop pads can even wash and dry themselves.

  • A Google Maps power-saving mode lands on Pixel 10 devices

A Google Maps power-saving mode lands on Pixel 10 devices

    November 27, 2025
    Hardware

If you have a Pixel 10 phone that you use for turn-by-turn directions in lieu of a dedicated GPS device, Google has an update that might be right up your alley. A Google Maps power-saving mode is now available for Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The company announced this feature earlier this month as part of its November 2025 Pixel Drop.

Power-saving mode is only available in portrait orientation and it works on your lock screen. If you tap the power button while using the driving navigation tool, the app will switch to a simpler monochrome look that retains the map layer, as 9to5Google notes. It looks a bit like the dark mode map in the Uber app.

You’ll see only see key details your journey, such as your next turn and expected travel time. Other elements, such as your current speed, are stripped out. You can still swipe down to see your notifications.

If you press the power button or tap the screen, Google Maps will revert to the standard view. The app also turns off power-saving mode when you get to your destination.

Google says that the power-saving mode can extend your Pixel 10’s battery life by up to four hours, so this could come in handy for long drives when you don’t have an easy way to charge your phone while you have it mounted on your dashboard. The more streamlined look could perhaps help to mitigate distracted driving too.

Google will probably bring the feature to other devices down the line, but it’s disappointing that the company is limiting it to the Pixel 10 lineup for now. Perhaps it will end up offering this stripped-down UI on the Android Auto version of Google Maps someday. too

It seems that Google is enabling power-saving mode by default via an update on its end. If you’d rather not be able to use the feature, you can switch it off by going to the settings in the app, then Navigation > Driving options and tapping the toggle for power-saving mode.

  • Building a production ready SaaS starter with Next.js 16: what actually took the longest

    November 27, 2025
    Software

When people talk about building a SaaS, the focus is often on the core idea. In reality, most of the time disappears into the same invisible foundation work that never shows up in demos.

    Landing pages.
    Authentication.
    Billing.
    Emails.
    SEO.
    Analytics.
    Monitoring.
    Testing.

Before any real feature exists, weeks are already gone.

We recently built a production ready SaaS starter on top of Next.js 16, and I want to share what actually took the longest time, what broke in production, and what we would do differently if we started again today.

    1. Authentication was not the hard part. The edge cases were

Setting up basic email and OAuth login was easy. The real pain started with everything around it.

    Session refresh across server components

Token sync between API routes and middleware

    Handling partial OAuth profiles

    Account linking edge cases

Deleting users and cascading data safely

The basic tutorial version works in one afternoon. Making it safe in production is what took days.

If you are building your own auth, design the account lifecycle first. Registration is only a small part of it.

    2. Subscriptions are easy until invoices and webhooks enter the room

The first Stripe checkout took less than an hour. What followed took a week.

    Webhook reliability

    Retrying failed payments

    Grace periods

    Plan downgrades without breaking access

Invoice state matching your internal DB state

The hardest part was not charging users. It was keeping subscription state consistent between Stripe, the database, and the frontend UI.

Strong advice: model your subscription states on paper before writing a single line of billing code.

    3. Emails were a silent source of production bugs

Email feels trivial until it breaks user trust.

    Verification emails going to spam

    Password reset links expiring incorrectly

Edge cases when users change emails mid session

Race conditions between auth and email dispatch

We ended up treating email as a first class production system, not a utility. Logging, retries, and delivery monitoring became mandatory.

    4. SEO and metadata took longer than expected

Next.js makes rendering easy. SEO correctness still takes discipline.

    Canonical URLs

    OG and Twitter cards

    Sitemap updates during dynamic routing

Indexing control between preview and production

    Structured data validation

None of it is conceptually hard, but missing even one piece quietly hurts distribution for months.

    5. Analytics without polluting the app took multiple rewrites

We wanted clean analytics without slowing the app.

Client side tracking without hydration errors

    Server side events for billing

    Privacy safe defaults

Mapping anonymous to authenticated users cleanly

The mistake we made early was adding analytics after everything else. It should be part of the core architecture from the beginning.

    6. Testing was delayed. That was a mistake

E2E tests always come last. That is where the real bugs hide.

The moment we added full Playwright coverage for:

    Auth flows

    Checkout

    Webhooks

    Dashboard state

We immediately discovered issues that had been invisible for weeks.

Testing earlier would have saved real production incidents.

    What we learned overall

Infrastructure always takes longer than expected.

Most SaaS bugs live in the invisible glue code.

Shipping fast is only possible if foundations are boringly solid.

Starters are not about speed. They are about eliminating entire failure classes.

This experience eventually led us to turn our internal setup into a reusable SaaS starter called Sabo, simply because we never wanted to repeat this whole process again.
You can find it here if you are curious: getsabo

But even if you never use any starter kit, the lessons above apply to every serious SaaS build.

If you are building a SaaS right now

    Ask yourself:

Do you fully understand your auth edge cases?

Can your billing system survive failed payments safely?

    Are emails observable and debuggable?

Will Google index exactly what you expect?

Do you trust your E2E tests more than your staging environment?

If even one answer is “not really”, that is where most long term pain starts.

If this was useful, I am happy to share deeper writeups on any of these parts in follow up posts. Auth, billing, email delivery, and SEO each deserve their own war stories.

  • Reggio, Coldiretti “denuncia” diverse storture su campagna agrumicola

    November 27, 2025
    Italy

    Riceviamo e pubblichiamo
