Are you on the hunt for new games but are tired of running out of options? Or are you someone who always takes advantage of free stuff? We don’t blame you. With increasing game prices and tariffs on the rise, you’ll want to save money whenever possible. Thankfully, there’s a place you can go where you’re able to nab free stuff while also giving you the choice to purchase other affordable games. Enter: the Epic Games Store.
After the huge success of Fortnite, a battle royale game that partnered with major brands like Marvel, Star Wars and DC, Epic decided to take things even further. In 2019, it launched its very own store to compete with Valve’s Steam. Unlike Steam, it offers free games every week, ranging from adorable indie titles to big-budget AAA hits.
But how do you access these free games? Is there something you need to do first? We have the answers you’re looking for. First, create a free Epic Games account. Once you’ve finished signing up, check out the free games section on the Epic Games Store each Thursday at 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m ET, 4 p.m BST) to discover the picks of the week.
It’s important to know that the number of free games you receive each week may differ but you are always guaranteed to receive at least one. That said, there may be some breaks during holidays, or occasions where the games themselves are not revealed until the day of. There are also occasions, such as the lead-up to Christmas, where Epic releases new free games every single day. But you know what the best part is? These downloaded games are yours to keep — forever!
The Epic Games Store is exclusively available for PC, so console gamers cannot access the weekly free games offered there. Additionally, while the store also provides games for Mac, compatibility may vary. So make sure you verify the game can run on your device before you download it.
Keylocker
If you’re a fan of rhythm and turn-based games, but also want to give a middle finger to the system, then you’ll want to pay attention to Keylocker.
Developed by Moonana Games and published by Serenity Forge, Keylocker is a Cyberpunk turn-based rhythm JRPG that puts players in the shoes of electric singer, B0B0. Only there’s just one teensy, eensy problem: They live in a world where music is outlawed. As a singer, you can see why that might be a kick in the teeth for ol’ B0B0.
Features include classic turn-based combat but with a rhythmic twist. You’ll have to master the timing of your shots, parries and blocks to kick your enemies to the curb. Better yet, there are zero random encounters, so you’ll be able to play through the game without having to worry about relentless grinding.
Keylocker also offers plenty of customization options. Not only are you able to change equipment, weapons and skills, but you’ll also be able to shape B0B0’s path in their own way, with unique skill trees and storylines depending on the choices you make throughout the game’s storyline. What’s not to like?
Pilgrims
If you’ve always wanted to travel and meet extraordinary people without actually leaving the house, then Amanita Design’s Pilgrims is just the game for you.
Usually $6, Pilgrims is now available free via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is “Overwhelmingly Positive,” with its most recent score being “Very Positive.”
What will be free in the Epic Games Store next week? (Aug. 7 to Aug. 14)
112 Operator
If you want one of the most stressful jobs in the world without the weight of actually having lives depending on you, then Jutsu Games’ emergency service simulator will be well-worth your time.
If it sounds simple, let me reassure you that’s far from the case. While players can pick and choose the width and length of the area they cover (a small town versus a bustling city, for example), they also have to pay attention to several other factors when making those all-important calls. I’m talking about the weather, traffic and the changing of seasons. All of these have some level of added danger you need to be mindful of.
Better yet, you don’t have to ride alone. Road Redemption also comes with four-player split-screen co-op, meaning you and your friends can ride out and deliver racing beat-em-up action together.
Usually $20, Road Redemption will be available free next week via the Epic Games Store. At the time of writing, a review score is not available. However, on rival storefront Steam, its overall rating is “Very Positive,” with its most recent score also being “Very Positive.”
