Aberdeen v Motherwell & Rangers v County both off

Author: BBC Sport

Aberdeen’s home match with Motherwell has become the second of Wednesday night’s Scottish Premiership games to be postponed because of travel disruption caused by Storm Gerrit.

Rangers’ meeting with Ross County was called off earlier, with the visitors unable to make the journey south.

The A9 and other major roads in Scotland have been impacted by snow, heavy rain and strong winds.

Aberdeen cited “potentially hazardous travelling conditions” for fans.

While the Pittodrie pitch and stadium had coped “admirably well”, the club said the storm had left “significant flooding and damage to most of the major routes in and out of Aberdeen, with rail services all cancelled”.

Chief executive Alan Burrows added: “We remained in dialogue with all stakeholders and after putting our case across to the league, it was agreed between the two clubs, the league and the police that it was safest to rearrange the game.”

Motherwell, who had travelled to Aberdeen on Wednesday morning, confirmed the postponement resulted from police advice on road closures and apologised for any inconvenience caused to fans.

Manager Stuart Kettlewell told BBC Scotland: “I think it’s the sensible thing to do. When these storms are coming, it’s maybe one for us all to take stock as soon as possible – maybe in the morning.”

Ross County said the decision to postpone their game at Ibrox was made after consultation with Police Scotland.

A brief statement from the hosts read: “Rangers can confirm this evening’s Scottish Premiership fixture with Ross County has been postponed.

“Despite the Ibrox playing surface being in good condition and ready to host the match, adverse weather conditions on the A9 means our visitors have been unable to reach Glasgow.

“A new date for the fixture will be confirmed in due course.”

Rangers are five points behind leaders Celtic with two games in hand, while 10th-place County are a point above Motherwell, with Aberdeen occupying eighth.

All four clubs are due to play on Saturday, with Rangers visiting Celtic Park for the Old Firm derby.

Three of Wednesday’s five scheduled matches – including the Edinburgh derby – remain on.
