Flock of Dimes Announces Tour and New Album, Shares Video for New Song: Watch

    July 23, 2025
    Music

Flock of Dimes, the solo project of Wye Oak multi-instrumentalist and producer Jenn Wasner, has announced a new album and a short tour. The Life You Save is out October 10 via Sub Pop. Leading the record is the new song “Long After Midnight,” which comes with an intimate music video directed by Spencer Kelly in which Wasner performs the song on acoustic guitar sitting on a living room floor while movers remove each item around her one by one. Watch it below.

“My previous records, generally, have been a summary of things I had already been through— experiences I had observed and reflected upon, reporting back from some amount of distance. But this record is different,” wrote Wasner. “It is an attempt to report from inside of a process that is ongoing and unfinished, from which I will likely never fully emerge as long as I am alive: my struggle within the cycles of addiction and co-dependency.… In the end, it is my hope that this record exists as a testament to the depth of my love for those I cannot save, and that it might provide some comfort for anyone who is still learning how to love and live for themselves.”

The Life You Save was produced by Wasner and recorded in both Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Los Angeles. The 12-track LP follows Flock of Dimes sophomore studio album, Head of Roses, from 2021. As for Wasner’s work in Wye Oak, that band’s latest LP was 2023’s Every Day Like the Last.

Flock of Dimes will embark on a headlining tour of the United States at the end of this year. Beginning on November 6 in Philadelphia, Wasner plans to bring The Life You Save songs to life in select cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. That run ends on December 5 in Los Angeles. Find her complete list of tour dates down below.

Five Latinx Artists Explore Materiality, Identity, and Belonging in ‘Los Encuentros’

Marfa sits at the crossroads of US-90 and US-67 in the expansive Chihuahua Desert of far West Texas. About 60 miles from Mexico, U.S. Border Patrol trucks are a common sight along the roads, in addition to an unmissable, otherworldly tethered surveillance blimp that hovers near the highway between the town center and one of its most iconic installations, Elmgreen & Dragset’s “Prada Marfa.”

As the current administration’s immigration policy has taken effect, the politics of identity and geography have again been thrust front and center—often violently. In this remote borderland, where the one-stoplight-town has been redefined by influential art world personalities for several decades in an idiosyncratic convergence of ideas and lifestyles, there is a unique opportunity to engage with themes of community, narrative, socio-economic realities, and a sense of place.

Ballroom Marfa’s summer exhibition, Los Encuentros, gathers the work of Latinx artists Justin Favela, Ozzie Juarez, Antonio Lechuga, Narsiso Martinez, and Yvette Mayorga. The gallery describes an aim of the show, the title of which translates to “the meetings” or “the gatherings,” as “the representation of Latinx culture to confront the accessibility of art spaces, colonial art histories, the conditions of labor, and lived experience.”

Amid daily news reports of ICE raids around the nation, the work in Los Encuentros is a timely and provocative exploration of today’s societal complexities along with being a way of “responding to the experiences of the people and places they engage with and depict,” a statement says.

All the artists employ a wide range of materials and techniques, from Mayorga’s frosting-like, piped paint to Favela’s vibrant ruffled paper installations redolent of piñatas. Lechuga uses Mexican blankets, or cobijas, creating sewn textile collages that explore a wide range of experiences and perspectives amid the current political climate.

Martinez continues to create intimate, candid portraits of farm workers by using produce boxes, bags, and repurposed plastic as his substrates as a reminder of the often invisible labor that goes into putting food on Americans’ tables. And Juarez has completely transformed Ballroom’s facade in to a giant painting derived from ancient Mesoamerican motifs.

Los Encuentros is curated by Texas-based Maggie Adler, who expressed delight at being able to collaborate “with artists whose practices center on allowing a broad range of community members to see themselves represented in art spaces.”

The show continues through October 12. Find more on the gallery’s website. And during open hours, keep an eye out for Rachel Hayes’ colorful patchwork flag that flies out front.

Anti-Elon Musk protesters are coming for Tesla’s new diner

Tesla just opened a retro diner in Los Angeles, so it was only a matter of time before anti-Elon Musk protesters caught wind.

The long-awaited retrofuturistic diner, complete with giant outdoor screens for drive-in movies, dozens of Supercharger stalls, and an Optimus robot serving popcorn, opened to huge lines in West Hollywood on July 21st. Protesters are planning on demonstrating outside the newly opened diner on July 26th, according to the Action Network website, which has served as a repository for the so-called Tesla Takedown movement.

“[Elon Musk] wants to celebrate his reign of terror in OUR CITY, Occupied Los Angeles, with a cheesy Tesla-branded diner exclusively for his legion of conmen stock-pumpers and MLM influencer tryhards?” the website reads. “WE SAY HELL NO.”

“[Elon Musk] wants to celebrate his reign of terror in OUR CITY, Occupied Los Angeles, with a cheesy Tesla-branded diner exclusively for his legion of conmen stock-pumpers and MLM influencer tryhards?”

Since early February of this year, Tesla has been the target of protesters opposed to Musk’s involvement with the Trump administration. As Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) sought to eliminate humanitarian aid programs and fire tens of thousands of government workers, demonstrators have expressed their rage by picketing outside Tesla showrooms and demanding Tesla owners sell their vehicles.

Others have taken things further, defacing Tesla vehicles with anti-Musk slogans, smashing windows, and even setting some Tesla property on fire. Musk’s allies in the Trump administration are threatening to prosecute anyone caught defacing Tesla vehicles by classifying the acts as “domestic terrorism.“

Musk officially stepped back from DOGE in May, although he claims that he will remain involved with the group in some capacity. The following month, Musk and President Donald Trump had a public falling out, with the two engaged in a war of words. Trump has threatened to deport Musk, while Musk has accused the president of being on Jeffrey Epstein’s alleged client list.

Despite all the drama, anti-Musk protesters are trying to keep up the energy. Joel Lava, who has been helping lead the Tesla Takedown protests in Los Angeles, said he expects a large crowd outside the diner this Saturday.

“It’s in West Hollywood,” Lava told The Verge. “I think it’s safe to say that Elon Musk is not a popular figure in West Hollywood. So I don’t think it’s going to be hard to protest it.”

“I think it’s safe to say that Elon Musk is not a popular figure in West Hollywood.”

While the weekly crowds may have diminished slightly from their peak in the spring, and while Musk may have distanced himself from the Trump administration, the Tesla Takedown movement hasn’t given up. Lava said that dozens of people still show up every week to protest outside of Tesla locations in LA, buoyed by news of Tesla’s worsening earnings statement and falling sales. He also cited recent reports of food that was supposed to ship out with USAID being left to rot in warehouses thanks to DOGE’s funding cuts. And the news that Musk may start his own political party has further motivated the activists to keep up their presence, Lava said.

“Yes, our numbers have dwindled, but they have stayed strong,” he said. “We’ve already built a community, [and] people will show up.”

Lava said the tactics will be similar to those used in protests outside of Tesla dealerships and charging stations: raising awareness about Musk’s efforts to decimate humanitarian aid and destroy the federal government.

“I think our simple message is Tesla funds fascism,” Lava said. “You’re going into this cafe, and you’re giving a $300 billion man your own money to help destroy the fabric of our country. That’s why we don’t want you buying Tesla. And that’s why you shouldn’t go into this cafe.”

  • Windows 11 officially kills the Blue Screen of Death in latest update

Windows 11 officially kills the Blue Screen of Death in latest update

    July 23, 2025
    Hardware

Microsoft has released update KB5062660 for Windows 11 24H2, and that means the iconic “Blue Screen of Death” has officially been replaced by the long-awaited “Black Screen of Death” (which coincidentally shared the same BSOD acronym).

We previously reported on this when Microsoft began testing the new black screen in a preview version of Windows. With this optional cumulative update, the change is now available to all Windows users.

Update KB5062660 is an optional update for Windows 11 24H2, which means the OS won’t automatically download it even if it’s available. You have to install it manually using Windows Update.

Alternatively, you can also download and install update KB5062660 directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The full name of the update is 2025-07 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 24H2, and it’s available for both x64 and arm64 systems.

After installing update KB5062660, Windows 11 will be brought up to Build 26100.4770 and will gain a preview of all the new features Microsoft plans to release on Patch Tuesday in August 2025. That future update will be auto-installed on all compatible computers.

The new Black Screen of Death

The most obvious new feature of update KB5062660, which you hopefully won’t see any time soon, is the Black Screen of Death that replaces the former Blue Screen of Death. The only difference between the two BSODs is visual, as nothing changes from a technical standpoint.

Not only does the new BSOD have a black background, but it also no longer shows the sad emoticon or the QR code in addition to explanatory text. Instead, the new BSOD only informs you that a problem has occurred and that Windows needs to be restarted.

The problem with the new BSOD is that it’s usually only displayed for about two seconds before it disappears, so a Windows user who isn’t expecting a BSOD might not even recognize that Windows has run into a problem before it restarts, especially if you’re preoccupied with something else (e.g., on your phone or talking with someone).

Other new features in the update

According to Windows Latest, update KB5062660 will bring many improvements for so-called AI PCs, and many of these new features will be exclusive to Copilot+ PCs.

In addition, the controversial Recall feature is to be introduced to EU users, though you’ll be able to block access to Recall for certain applications and websites. Recall will only work locally on your PC, and you’ll be able to disable Recall completely in Windows settings.

Another improvement brings faster recovery for Windows computers that run into widespread issues. The new Quick Machine Recovery feature automatically detects and fixes widespread issues via Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), attempting to restore the PC by downloading a patch from Windows Update. This new feature is designed to help repair computers that can no longer boot up.

  • raku-sparrow6 – swiss army knife for alpine linux

    July 23, 2025
    Software

Sparrow is a Rakulang based framework that allows to automate routine tasks, the beauty of it – one can use prepacked plugins available from public Sparrow repository – https://sparrowhub.io

Sparrow is installed as native Alpine package:

    sudo apk add --no-cache --wait 120 -u --repository=http://dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org/alpine/edge/community raku-sparrow6

    Setup plugins repository

    export SP6_REPO=http://sparrowhub.io/repo s6 --index-update

    Search alpine plugins

Sparrowhub has a lot of plugins, to limit search to Alpine related plugins:

    s6 --search alpine

There are now not too many of them for Alpine, eventually I am going to add more, put in comments what sort of plugins one would like to see

    Run plugin

To run plugin, use Sparrow cli, you can also pass parameters to a plugin. For example, to validate APKBUILD file one can use apkbuild-strict plugin:

    s6 --plg-run apkbuild-strict@path=/path/to/apkbuild/file

That way Sparrow plugins could be run from terminal or get inlined into shell scripts

    Conclusion

It’d be great to hear feedback from (Alpine) users, what sort of tasks could be implemented by Sparrow

  • Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham Announce Long-Awaited Buckingham Nicks Reissue

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham Announce Long-Awaited Buckingham Nicks Reissue

    July 23, 2025
    Music

Last week, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham shared corresponding messages on social. “And if you go forward…” Nicks posted, quoting a lyric from “Frozen Lake,” a song that appeared on the fabled 1973 album Buckingham Nicks, which she and Buckingham released just about two years prior to joining Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham’s post completed the line–“I’ll meet you there”—and now we know why.

For the first time, Buckingham Nicks is getting an official reissue and coming to digital streaming platforms. The new edition is out September 19 via Rhino. The vinyl edition was remastered from the original analog masters tapes, and Chris Bellman did the remastering for the digital edition. Listen to a newly remastered version of album opener “Crying in the Night” below.

Fleetwood Mac fired Buckingham in 2018. The guitarist and singer-songwriter then sued the band for breach of contract and blamed Nicks for the firing. The lawsuit was settled that same year, but it wasn’t until 2021 that Nicks made her first public statement addressing the situation. In a letter to Rolling Stone, she called Buckingham’s version of events “factually inaccurate” and wrote “I proactively removed myself from the band and a situation I considered to be toxic to my well-being.”

After undergoing open heart surgery in 2019, Buckingham shared his latest solo studio album, Lindsey Buckingham, in 2021. Nicks has consistently toured over the last few years, and, in 2024, she shared the abortion rights anthem “The Lighthouse,” following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Read Mark Richardson’s Sunday Review of Buckingham Nicks, and revisit the feature “Stevie Nicks: Her Art and Life in 33 Songs.”

New “AppleCare One” plan bundles three extended warranties for $20 a month

    July 23, 2025
    Hardware

Apple is introducing a fairly major update to its AppleCare extended warranty program today: AppleCare One, a program meant to cover users with multiple Apple devices who want extended hardware and software support for all of them. The program can cover up to three devices, regardless of what kind of device they are, for $19.99 a month, and additional devices can be added for a flat $5.99 a month.

The new program comes several months after Apple raised prices for iPhone AppleCare+ subscriptions in the US, adding 50 cents per month to most plans.

Whether AppleCare One will save you money depends on the kind of devices you’re covering. Generally speaking, you’ll at least break even for any plan that includes coverage for an iPhone, but you save more if you’re paying for coverage for high-end gadgets like the iPhone Pro and iPad Pro.
