  • Ohio State prioritized 3-way QB battle over portal

    July 23, 2025
    Sports

LAS VEGAS — Ohio State coach Ryan Day reiterated Tuesday that the Buckeyes didn’t add a transfer portal quarterback this offseason because they want to develop the three talented passers they already have on campus.

Sophomore Julian Sayin is battling junior Lincoln Kienholz and true freshman Tavien St. Clair for the starting job as the Buckeyes look to replace Will Howard. After transferring from Kansas State in January 2024, Howard quarterbacked Ohio State to its first national championship in a decade in his lone season with the Buckeyes.

“When we have to, or when we’re left in that situation, we will [bring in a transfer quarterback],” Day said during Big Ten media days. “But we want to develop guys, and these are three guys we want to continue to develop.”

Sayin was the nation’s top-rated quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class. After initially signing with Alabama, the 6-foot-1, 203-pound Sayin transferred to Ohio State once coach Nick Saban retired.

“Julian certainly gets the ball out quickly,” Day said. “He’s had a good offseason. He’s intelligent. He’s very competitive. He’s got good athleticism. He’s accurate.”

But the 6-3, 207-pound Kienholz pushed Sayin in the spring and will have an opportunity in the preseason to win the job. Kienholz, only the second player to sign with the Buckeyes from the state of South Dakota, was a multisport star in high school.

“Just a tremendous athlete,” Day said of Kienholz, who has been in the program for three years. “You pick a sport, he can do it. He’s like a four handicap [in golf]. He can hit the [baseball] out of the park. He was a major league baseball prospect. He can windmill dunk. He can do a lot of things.”

Because he arrived on campus only earlier this year, St. Clair remains behind in the competition. But he was the nation’s No. 10 overall recruit and the gem of Ohio State’s incoming recruiting class.

“He certainly has the size, the makeup,” Day said of the 6-4, 225-pound St. Clair. “He’s a great young man. He’s very intelligent. He’s athletic. He can throw the ball. I think he’s got a really bright future ahead of him. …

    “They’re all exciting guys.”

Day declined to give a timetable of when he might announce a starter ahead of the Buckeyes’ blockbuster opener against Texas on Aug. 30 — a rematch of last season’s playoff semifinal.

“I think it’s important for the locker room to believe in whoever that is,” Day said. “When the locker room believes in that guy, that’s the right time. … So we’ll see where this goes.”

    Recensione Honor Pad V9

    July 23, 2025
    Hardware

    Honor Pad V9 recensione: design

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

    Honor Pad V9 recensione: display

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

    Honor Pad V9 recensione: software

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

Honor Pad V9 recensione: performance and fotocamere

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

    Honor Pad V9 recensione: batteria

The Honor Pad V9 on a bronze table.

  • Architecting Distributed Systems in .NET with an Event Bus

Architecting Distributed Systems in .NET with an Event Bus

    July 23, 2025
    Software

In today’s world of microservices and cloud-native applications, ensuring loose coupling, resilience, and scalability is non-negotiable. This article dissects the implementation of an event-driven architecture using an Event Bus in a .NET microservices ecosystem, going beyond tutorials to discuss:

    • The architectural decisions

    • Trade-offs and reasoning

    • How this approach scales across domains

    • Fault-tolerant patterns

    • Enterprise-grade observability and security

    • Actual production-oriented C# code blocks using MassTransit, RabbitMQ, and EF Core

⚙️ 1. Why Event-Driven Architecture in Distributed Systems?

In monolithic systems, services share memory and execution contexts. In distributed systems, services must communicate via messages either synchronously (REST, gRPC) or asynchronously (queues, events).

❌ Problems with Synchronous Communication in Microservices

    • Tight Coupling: Service A can’t function if Service B is down.

    • Latency Propagation: Slow downstream services slow the whole chain.

    • Retry Storms: Spikes in failures cause cascading failures.

    • Scaling Limits: Hard to scale independently.

    ✅ Event-Driven Benefits

    event-driven benefits

🏗 2. Event Bus Architecture Design

At the heart of an event-driven architecture lies the Event Bus.

Key Responsibilities of the Event Bus:

    • Routing messages to interested consumers

    • Decoupling services

    • Guaranteeing delivery via retries or dead-lettering

    • Supporting message schemas and contracts

    • Enabling replayability (useful for reprocessing)

    📐 System Overview Diagram

    [Order Service] ---> (Event Bus) ---> [Inventory Service] | ---> [Email Notification Service] | ---> [Audit/Logging Service]

🧱 3. Implementing the Event Bus with .NET, MassTransit & RabbitMQ

    🧰 Tooling Stack:

    • .NET 8

    • MassTransit: abstraction over messaging infrastructure

    • RabbitMQ: event bus/message broker

    • EF Core: for persistence

    • Docker: for running RabbitMQ locally

    • OpenTelemetry: for tracing (observability)

🧑‍💻 4. Code Implementation: Event Contract

All services must share a versioned contract:

    // Contracts/OrderCreated.cs public record OrderCreated { public Guid OrderId { get; init; } public string ProductName { get; init; } public int Quantity { get; init; } public DateTime CreatedAt { get; init; } }

    ✅ Why use record?

    • Immutability

    • Value-based equality

    • Minimal serialization footprint

    🏭 5. Producer (Order Service)

    This service publishes OrderCreated events.

    public class OrderService { private readonly IPublishEndpoint _publisher; public OrderService(IPublishEndpoint publisher) { _publisher = publisher; } public async Task PlaceOrder(string product, int quantity) { var orderEvent = new OrderCreated { OrderId = Guid.NewGuid(), ProductName = product, Quantity = quantity, CreatedAt = DateTime.UtcNow }; await _publisher.Publish(orderEvent); } }

    MassTransit Configuration

    services.AddMassTransit(x => { x.UsingRabbitMq((ctx, cfg) => { cfg.Host("rabbitmq://localhost"); }); });

    📬 6. Consumer (Inventory Service)

    public class OrderCreatedConsumer : IConsumer<OrderCreated> { public async Task Consume(ConsumeContext<OrderCreated> context) { var order = context.Message; Console.WriteLine($"[Inventory] Deducting stock for: {order.ProductName}"); // Optional: Save to database or invoke other services } }

    Configuring the Consumer

    services.AddMassTransit(x => { x.AddConsumer<OrderCreatedConsumer>(); x.UsingRabbitMq((ctx, cfg) => { cfg.Host("rabbitmq://localhost"); cfg.ReceiveEndpoint("inventory-queue", e => { e.ConfigureConsumer<OrderCreatedConsumer>(ctx); e.UseMessageRetry(r => r.Interval(3, TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5))); e.UseInMemoryOutbox(); // prevents double-processing }); }); });

    🛠 7. Scaling Considerations

    🔄 Horizontal Scaling

    • RabbitMQ consumers can be load-balanced via competing consumers.

    • Add more containers → instant parallel processing.

    🧱 Bounded Contexts

    • Event-driven systems naturally map to domain-driven design boundaries.

    • Each service owns its domain and schema.

    🧬 Idempotency
Avoid processing the same event twice:

    if (_db.Orders.Any(o => o.Id == message.OrderId)) return;

    🔒 8. Production Concerns

    💥 Fault Tolerance

    • Automatic retries

    • Dead-letter queues

    • Circuit breakers (MassTransit middleware)

    🔍 Observability
    Integrate OpenTelemetry for tracing:

    services.AddOpenTelemetryTracing(builder => { builder.AddMassTransitInstrumentation(); });

    🔐 Security

    • Message signing

    • Message encryption (RabbitMQ + TLS)

    • Access control at broker level

📊 9. Event Storage & Replay (Optional but Powerful)

You can persist every event into an Event Store or a Kafka-like system for replaying.

    Benefits:

    • Audit trails

    • Debugging

    • Rehydrating state

    ⚖️ 10. Trade-offs to Consider

    trade-offs

    🚀 Conclusion

By introducing an Event Bus pattern into a distributed system, you’re not just optimizing communication, you’re investing in long-term maintainability, scalability, and resilience. With .NET and MassTransit, this becomes achievable with production-ready tooling and idiomatic C# code.

US nuclear weapons agency reportedly breached in Microsoft SharePoint attacks

    July 23, 2025
    Hardware

Hours after Microsoft revealed hacking groups affiliated with the Chinese government have been exploiting a flaw in its SharePoint software, Bloomberg News reports that the National Nuclear Security Administration has also been breached in the attacks.

A single source tells Bloomberg that the department, which provides the Navy with nuclear reactors for submarines, was caught up in the zero-day vulnerability that has hit more than 50 organizations in recent days. The exploit affects on-premises versions of SharePoint, but not the SharePoint Online service that Microsoft operates as part of its Microsoft 365 cloud service.

While the nuclear weapons agency has reportedly been affected by the SharePoint exploit, no sensitive or classified information has leaked according to Bloomberg. That might be because the US Department of Energy uses Microsoft 365 cloud systems for a lot of its SharePoint work. “The department was minimally impacted due to its widespread use of the Microsoft M365 cloud and very capable cybersecurity systems,” says a Department of Energy spokesperson in a statement to Bloomberg. “A very small number of systems were impacted. All impacted systems are being restored.”

Microsoft has now patched all versions of SharePoint that are impacted by the zero-day exploit. The flaw allowed hackers to remotely access SharePoint servers and steal data, passwords, and even move across connected services. The exploit appears to have originated from a combination of two bugs that were presented at the Pwn2Own hacking contest in May.

Key Rates Move Higher for Homebuyers: Current Mortgage Interest Rates on July 23, 2025

    July 23, 2025
    Hardware

Check out CNET Money’s weekly mortgage rate forecast for a more in-depth look at what’s next for Fed rate cuts, labor data and inflation.

The average interest rate for a standard 30-year fixed mortgage is 6.78% today, up 0.03% over the last week. The average rate for a 15-year fixed mortgage is 6.05%, which is an increase of 0.05% from the same time last week. To qualify for lower mortgage rates, experts recommend making a higher down payment, improving your credit and comparison shopping between lenders.

    30-year fixed-rate 6.78% (+0.03)
    30-year fixed-rate jumbo 6.74% (-0.07)
    15-year fixed-rate 6.05% (+0.05)
    5/1 ARM 5.88% (-0.01)
    10-year fixed-rate 6.09% (+0.22)
    30-year fixed-rate refinance 6.87% (+0.06)
    15-year fixed-rate refinance 6.24% (+0.10)
    10-year fixed refinance 6.37% (+0.26)
Today’s average mortgage rates on July 23, 2025, compared with one week ago. We use rate data collected by Bankrate as reported by lenders across the US.

See all of today’s mortgage rates

What’s keeping mortgage rates elevated this year? Stubborn inflation, threats of a global trade war and policy turbulence have created an uncertain economic outlook. In response, the Federal Reserve has adopted a wait-and-see approach and holding borrowing rates steady since the start of the year.

Most economists predict the Fed will start lowering rates in September, particularly if President Trump eases some of his aggressive tariff measures or if the labor market continues to deteriorate.

Prospective homebuyers shouldn’t bank on mortgage rates becoming affordable overnight. While cheaper borrowing costs gradually trickle down to the housing market, the Fed doesn’t directly set lenders’ mortgage rates.

In today’s unaffordable housing market, mortgage rates are just one piece of the puzzle. Prospective buyers still have to contend with high home prices and skyrocketing homeownership expenses. The possibility of a job-loss recession is also pushing many households to tighten their budgets and take on less financial risk.

When mortgage rates start to fall, be ready to take advantage. Experts recommend shopping around and comparing multiple offers to get the lowest rate. Enter your information here to get a custom quote from one of CNET’s partner lenders.

About these rates: Bankrate’s tool features rates from partner lenders that you can use when comparing multiple mortgage rates.

What’s going on with mortgage rates right now?

The average 30-year fixed rate has hovered just below 7% for the last several months, resulting in cost-prohibitive monthly payments.

Mortgage rates are closely tied to the bond market, specifically the 10-year Treasury yield, which responds to investors’ expectations for inflation, labor data, changes to monetary policy and global measures like tariffs.

“Rates could fall if inflation keeps cooling and the labor market softens,” said Jeb Smith, licensed real estate agent and member of CNET Money’s expert review board. “On the other hand, tariffs could create new inflation pressure. Add in government deficits and increased bond supply, and that puts upward pressure on rates.”

Even as the Fed eventually starts to lower interest rates, experts caution that significant market volatility is likely. As a result, homebuyers are adopting a more patient and strategic approach to financing, comparing various loan types and planning ahead.

“Some are waiting, others are getting pre-approved now so they’re ready to act if rates fall,” said Smith.

For a look at mortgage rate movement in recent years, see the chart below.

Expert predictions for mortgage rates in 2025

Despite optimism about the 2025 housing market, persistent economic challenges and political instability have prevented it from bouncing back. Median family income has not kept pace with the surge in housing costs, requiring many households to earn double or triple their salary to afford a modest home in some cities.

Mortgage rates would have to take a big step down, close to 6% or below, to drum up significant homebuying demand. But according to Smith, the more likely scenario is a slow and steady decline in borrowing costs. A return to the record-low rates, around 2-3%, we saw during the pandemic would only happen if the economy tipped into a severe recession.

Fannie Mae’s forecast puts rates around 6.5% by the end of 2025 and 6.1% by the end of 2026.

Numerous risks could keep rates elevated. For instance, if tariffs cause inflation to reignite, which most experts and Fed officials expect, it could result in higher bond yields and fewer interest rate cuts by the central bank. Neither would help bring mortgage rates down for prospective buyers.

What is a good mortgage type and term?

Each mortgage has a loan term, or payment schedule. The most common mortgage terms are 15 and 30 years, although 10-, 20- and 40-year mortgages also exist. With a fixed-rate mortgage, the interest rate is set for the duration of the loan, offering stability. With an adjustable-rate mortgage, the interest rate is only fixed for a certain amount of time (commonly five, seven or 10 years), after which the rate adjusts annually based on the market. Fixed-rate mortgages are a better option if you plan to live in a home in the long term, but adjustable-rate mortgages may offer lower interest rates upfront.

    30-year fixed-rate mortgages

The average interest rate for a standard 30-year fixed mortgage is 6.78% today. A 30-year fixed mortgage is the most common loan term. It will often have a higher interest rate than a 15-year mortgage, but you’ll have a lower monthly payment.

    15-year fixed-rate mortgages

Today, the average rate for a 15-year, fixed mortgage is 6.05%. Though you’ll have a bigger monthly payment than a 30-year fixed mortgage, a 15-year loan usually comes with a lower interest rate, allowing you to pay less interest in the long run and pay off your mortgage sooner.

    5/1 adjustable-rate mortgages

A 5/1 ARM has an average rate of 5.88% today. You’ll typically get a lower introductory interest rate with a 5/1 ARM in the first five years of the mortgage. But you could pay more after that period, depending on how the rate adjusts annually. If you plan to sell or refinance your house within five years, an ARM could be a good option.

    Calculate your monthly mortgage payment

Getting a mortgage should always depend on your financial situation and long-term goals. The most important thing is to make a budget and try to stay within your means. CNET’s mortgage calculator below can help homebuyers prepare for monthly mortgage payments.

Where can I find the best mortgage rates?

Though mortgage rates and home prices are high, the housing market won’t be unaffordable forever. It’s always a good time to save for a down payment and improve your credit score to help you secure a competitive mortgage rate when the time is right.

    1. Save for a bigger down payment: Though a 20% down payment isn’t required, a larger upfront payment means taking out a smaller mortgage, which will help you save in interest.
    2. Boost your credit score: You can qualify for a conventional mortgage with a 620 credit score, but a higher score of at least 740 will get you better rates.
    3. Pay off debt: Experts recommend a debt-to-income ratio of 36% or less to help you qualify for the best rates. Not carrying other debt will put you in a better position to handle your monthly payments.
    4. Research loans and assistance: Government-sponsored loans have more flexible borrowing requirements than conventional loans. Some government-sponsored or private programs can also help with your down payment and closing costs.
    5. Shop around for lenders: Researching and comparing multiple loan offers from different lenders can help you secure the lowest mortgage rate for your situation.

From 2010 to 2015, Maksim Leonovits released music under the alias N4M3, producing a variety of atmospheric and minimal drum & bass and electronica. He saw releases on a variety of popular labels, including music in collaboration with fellow Anjunadeep artist Nuage. After an extended hiatus, Maksim returned earlier this year with a fresh sound, identity and broadened horizons. The ‘Eiscold EP’ marked a new chapter for Maksim – a deeply reflective collection of tracks, stemming from a combination of Maksim’s recent trips to the Alps and the inspiration that glaciers, mountains and the alpine environment offered him. This time round, the ‘Lonely Ghost EP’ offers a progression in his sound, incorporating catchy vocals on the title track, and experimenting with new tempos in ‘Wilderswil’.
