San Francisco’s Mass Transit hi-jacked

Ransomware found

If you are going to San Francisco, just be sure that you know the mass transit system has been hacked with ransomware and you can get your ride for free.

San Francisco Muni station computer screens (SFMTA ) across the city, displayed the phrase “You Hacked, ALL Data Encrypted.’  Apparently the system has been hacked for days and the SFMTA says it is investigating. Meanwhile passengers can travel for free.

A Muni spokesperson said: “There’s no impact to the transit service, but we have opened the fare gates as a precaution to minimize customer impact. Because this is an ongoing investigation it would not be appropriate to provide additional details at this point”.

Passengers will continue to find the metro gates open, and the system is not reading their payment cards. The fare gates were still wide open Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Embarcadero Station. Ticket kiosks were also out of service.

It is not all good news though. SFMTA workers are unsure if they will get paid this week because the hackers also took out Muni’s email systems.
