Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s divorce: What REALLY happened? Here’s the story so far…

Things have been tough for these two

Despite the couple announcing their split all the way back in September, we still aren’t over the news of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie‘s divorce.

Did ANYONE see that coming?

The Internet pretty much broke as Oscar-winning actress, Angelina announced she’d filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Brad and Twitter became inundated with speculation and Jennifer Anniston memes.

But as the surprising details surrounding the duo’s 12-year relationship began to unfold, the exact reasons behind the divorce have left us all a little puzzled.

So here it is, from the day the world found out, to spending their first Christmas apart – here’s the complete timeline of what we know about the Brangelina divorce so far…

19th September – Angelina files for divorce

Starting from the very beginning – 41-year-old, Angelina filed for divorce from her hubby, Brad, 53, in the Los Angeles Superior Court citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ after a whopping 12 years together.

20th September – The world finds out

And no-one could handle the news…

20th September The divorce papers are released AND we hear the first statements from the former couple

It was a big day as court documents revealed that Angelina was seeking sole physical custody of the couple’s six children: Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 8, – requesting that Brad only get’s joint legal custody.

Brad was the first to release a statement to People magazine, announcing that he was ‘very saddened’ by the news, adding: ‘All that matters ow is the well-being of our kids.’

Ange then spoke out through her lawyer, Laura Wasser, who announced: ‘This decision was made for the health of the family,’ and asked that the family was ‘given its privacy’.

21st September – Brad wants joint custody

TMZ reported that, despite Ange’s wishes, the Allied actor planned to fight for joint physical custody of their six kids.

22nd September – Brad is investigated by the Police?

The divorce started to get messy as multiple reports claimed that Brad was being investigated for child abuse by the Los Angeles Police Department following an incident involving his son, Maddox aboard the family’s private jet – charges which were later dropped.

A statement issued by the FBI read: ‘The FBI will not pursue further investigation. No charges have been filed in this matter.’

24th September – Ange’s dad speaks out

Despite the couple keeping pretty tight-lipped about their divorce, Ange’s dad, actor Jon Voight spoke out for the first time following the split, telling TMZ: ‘I’m concerned about anyone who’s going through tough times… for the family and for the kids.’

But he refused to say much else…

8th November – Has a legal agreement been reached?

It looked like the bitter feud was finally going to be over when a rep for Ange told People magazine that her and Brad had reached a legal agreement about the custody of their six children after she applied for sole custody with visitation from Brad.

Although it was revealed the kids would be staying in the care of their mother, the statement said ‘the children will continue therapeutic visits with their father’.

10th November Things get messy

It was claimed that Brad might have some audio recordings of his ex that could affect her bid to have full custody of the couple’s six children, as a source told The Sun: ‘We believe audio tapes exist of Angelina that would be absolutely dynamite if they were to be made public,

‘Nobody wants to play dirty like that – it’s not good for the children.’

Eeeesh. 

6th December – Christmas misery for Brad?

A source for People magazine revealed it could be bad news for Brad as he might be spending the festive period alone, revealing: ‘If a child says they don’t want to see Brad on Christmas, the psychiatrist isn’t going to force them, that’s the whole purpose of this agreement.’

Aww. 

7th December – Messy custody battle continues…

In documents obtained by numerous US publications, Brad’s legal team said that he filed an application requesting that records related to the custody issues of Brad and Ange’s kids be kept secret to ‘protect their privacy and to avoid subjecting them to the negative impact of the media coverage and public scrutiny of the case.’

Brad’s team also threw shade at Ange suggesting she is ‘continu[ing] to place her own interests above those of the minor children and to disregard their privacy rights when she believes it may benefit her.’

Ouch. 

5th January – Ange hits back 

Ange’s camp hit back at Brad claiming that he’s just trying to ‘deflect from [his] own role in the media storm which has engulfed the parties’ children.’

Adding: ‘There is little doubt that [Brad] would prefer to keep the entire case private, particularly given the detailed investigations by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Dept. of Children and Family Services into allegation of abuse.’

8th January – Brad’s big moment

The actor took to the Golden Globe’s stage in Beverly Hills to introduce the film Moonlight  and was greeted with a HUGE round of applause and rapturous cheers from the audience.

Some guests even gave him a standing ovation, signalling that they’re very much behind Brad in the midst of his divorce proceedings.

10th January – A united front

Documents obtained by CNN revealed what we all wanted to here and confirmed the return of a united Brangelina.

The statement read: ‘The parties and their counsel have signed agreements to preserve the privacy rights of their children and family by keeping all court documents confidential and engaging a private judge to make any necessary legal decisions and to facilitate the expeditious resolution of any remaining issues.

‘The parents are committed to act as a united front to effectuate recovery and reunification.’
