West Ham United assistant manager Billy McKinlay has said the Hammers are used to fixture congestion in what is their third successive season in Europe.
In a period where West Ham were supposed to have two weeks off between games, a 1-1 draw against Bristol City in the FA Cup eight days ago means they will face the Robins in a replay at Ashton Gate on Tuesday night.
Speaking after comments from striker Michail Antonio about scheduling the replay in the Premier League winter break, McKinlay said it is something David Moyes’ side are familiar with.
“I’ve not seen those quotes. The way they’ve structured the breaks is hybrid, so they struggle to fit the fixtures in, so I’ve not really looked too deeply into the fixture dates.
“The players play a lot of games and the fixture calendar is congested, but that’s the way it is.
“Our players are certainly used to having this number of games and we’re delighted we’re progressing in so many competitions.”
West Ham will play a minimum of 51 matches this season in all competitions. The Hammers played 57 in the 2022/23 campaign and 56 in the 2021/22 season.
