Erik ten Hag’s reign as Manchester United manager is reaching the end and there is “no coming back”, says former Premier League striker Chris Sutton.

United reached the FA Cup final on Sunday, but needed penalties to beat Championship side Coventry, despite leading 3-0 with 20 minutes to go at Wembley.

They are seventh in the Premier League, 16 points off the top four, and were eliminated in the Champions League group stage this season.

“I really don’t know where Ten Hag goes from this,” said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

“It is the end for him now – there is no way he is coming back after that.”

Former Newcastle and Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given agreed, saying: “The writing is definitely on the wall for him.

“It doesn’t look good for him – he looked lost at times on the touchline. There is a lot of noise around the club at the moment.”

Goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes had put the Reds in control.

Ten Hag took winger Alejandro Garnacho off before Coventry’s first goal, and Kobbie Mainoo was replaced immediately after.

Both have been bright sparks for United this season.

“After the game people are looking at Ten Hag’s substitutions but even he couldn’t have foreseen that as the worse scenario. They were cruising,” said Sutton, who won the Premier League with Blackburn in 1995.

“The performance after 70 minutes was pretty symptomatic of how Manchester United have played this season – they lost control.

“They couldn’t regain control and that has been the issue all season.”

Ten Hag, who won the Carabao Cup in his first season in charge last year, admitted his side “got away with one” but said it was “not an embarrassment”.

“We can play on very high levels, but we can go to very low levels in the same game,” said Ten Hag. “That’s not explainable.

“I have to teach my players, clear. We have to do better on such occasions. On several occasions we let each other down. Today we got away with it.”

United will face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on 25 May, in a repeat of last season’s final which the Blues won 2-1 on their way to a historic Treble.

Danny Murphy told BBC Match of the Day that winning the trophy “doesn’t matter” when discussing Ten Hag’s future.

But former Manchester United defender Gary Neville told Sky Sports on Sunday: “Winning trophies cannot be underestimated. They won a trophy last season [the Carabao Cup] and if they won the FA Cup it would be extremely difficult to sack him.”

Ten Hag clearly under pressure – analysis

Since his co-ownership was announced on Christmas Eve, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and new United director Sir Dave Brailsford have presided over a complete overhaul of United’s backroom team.

The latest appointment was Jason Wilcox as technical director after his exit from Southampton was successfully negotiated.

United hope to secure the services of Dan Ashworth as sporting director but there is still no agreement on that with Newcastle and as it presently stands, it could be September, once the summer transfer window has closed, that the deal is finally completed.

Ten Hag is clearly under pressure.

However, his supporters continue to make the comparison with Mikel Arteta, who won the FA Cup in his first season as Arsenal boss but also finished eighth twice and then fifth before getting the squad he wanted.

Their win percentage is broadly similar, which fuels belief the situation is not quite as bad as some of the recent performances have made it appear.

André Villas-Boas demonstrou preocupação com a atual situação financeira do FC Porto e também criticou o contrato celebrado para a exploração comercial do Estádio do Dragão contratualizada recentemente entre a SAD e a Ithaka.

«[O FC Porto] está em incumprimento, é a informação que temos. Haverá uma coima. Isto revela um presidente que esconde a realidade aos sócios, sabe que essa coima e suspensão existe, mas não quer dizer. Em segundo [lugar], será mais um fator de pressão para esta direção, se for eleita», disse o antigo treinador e candidato a presidente dos dragões.

Villas-Boas considera que a exploração comercial do Dragão vale mais do que 65 milhões de euros e assume que desconhece a possibilidade de rescindir o contrato até 1 de julho.

«Estou disponível para analisar contratos e escolher o melhor caminho. Desconhecemos esse acordo. Não sei se o presidente está bem consciente sobre se há cláusulas penais relacionadas com a rescisão imediata. Se ele diz que não há, é um bom sinal para o FC Porto, porque é um sinal de renegociação com o parceiro. Isso seria muito bom», frisou.

O antigo treinador deixou também duras críticas a João Rafael Koelher, candidato a vice-presidente pela lista de Pinto da Costa.

«Pinto da Costa está refém de João Rafael Koehler e da quantidade de investidores que empresta dinheiro ao clube. Este candidato Pinto da Costa não é o mesmo com a força, carisma e determinação que conhecemos. É outro, está refém deste fundo e destes investidores que lhe foram emprestando dinheiro para poder pagar salários, agentes e fornecedores. Só o candidato a vice da lista A é que tem acesso a toda a informação de taxas de juro, das que ele próprio cobra e de todas as outras a que o FC Porto se contrai. Nós não temos acesso, se bem que temos pedido», destacou.

Villas-Boas assumiu que, se for eleito, terá de haver «uma boa balança de portismo» para ver os reais interesses de Koehler ao negociar com o clube. Além disso, quanto à Academia na Maia, mostrou-se «disponível para analisar contratos e escolher o melhor caminho para o FC Porto», de forma a que não se atrase novamente numa obra.

Villas-Boas garantiu que a violência na Assembleia-Geral, «jamais acontecerá» se for eleito presidente e, no que toca às claques, prometeu uma «regulamentação nova» para corrigir «falhas evidentes na bilhética».

«A minha intenção é tornar o FC Porto assistente nos dois processos abertos no MP, as agressões aos sócios na AG e o caso da bilhética. Vamos ver a que conclusões chegamos», adiantou.

O candidato a presidente do FC Porto, nas eleições de 27 de abril, garantiu que quer manter «conversas» com Rui Costa e Frederico Varandas «para criar o melhor produto» e não estar afastado das «grandes decisões estruturantes do futebol português».

«Todos os clubes precisam de bons rivais e é preciso lutar pelo bem comum do futebol português», frisou, tendo ainda assumido que não sabe onde se vai sentar no clássico de domingo, dia seguinte às eleições.

«É uma boa pergunta, em caso de vitória interessava saber. Temos de levar as coisas com calma e esperar pelo ato eleitoral, pela contagem, fazer as devidas homenagens às outras candidaturas e decidir. Aqueles meus lugares anuais estão lá e não é impossível que dia 28 me sente lá», rematou.

Allo Stadium non ci saranno Theo Hernandez e Calabria, espulsi nel corso dei disordini scoppiati in campo nel finale di gara.

“Dobbiamo finire bene il campionato, sabato abbiamo una partita importante. Purtroppo non siamo risuciti a pareggiare nemmeno questo derby – ha dichiarato il tecnico ai microfoni Dazn – . Non sono deluso dal punto vista tattico. La nostra priorità era preparare la partita e cercare di togliere la parità numerica nei due contro due offensivi, di non essere troppo alti e trovare spazi per le ripartenze”.

“L’Inter nel primo tempo ci ha fatto male sul calcio d’angolo e poi con le ripartenze. È inevitabile che provando a fare la partita poi qualcosa concedi. La realtà è che volevamo difendere piu bassi per non concedere quello che è successo con il secondo gol, che ci ha complicato ancora di più la partita. Abbiamo lottato con grande volontà. Ci è mancato quel pizzico di fortuna per il pareggio, perché le occasioni le abbiamo create”.

“Loro hanno fatto un campionato eccezionale perdendo solo una partita e quasi per sbaglio. Sono quattro anni che hanno la rosa piu forte della Serie A. Se la differenza tra l’Inter e le altre squadre è così, significa che loro sono veramente forti e che tutti gli altri dovranno fare dei passi avanti. Noi compresi”.

“Le partite con la Roma non sono state quelle ci aspettavamo, ci siamo bloccati e abbiamo mancato un obettivo in cui credevamo. Fine di un ciclo? Non saprei. Inzaghi un anno fa sembrava non dico da buttare ma via ma sicuramente in difficoltà. Io sto bene, e la squadra ha ancora margini di migloramento. Finiamo il campionato e poi faremo le valutazioni che occorre fare”.

Giorgio Furlani nell’immediato post derby ha parlato del futuro di Pioli e della squadra, approfondendo anche il tema mercato.

Giorgio Furlani, ai microfoni di DAZN ha commentato il sesto derby consecutivo perso dal Milan contro l’Inter. L’ad rossonero ha argomentato su varie tematiche, spaziando dalle aspettative che c’erano per questa stagione a quelle che ci saranno nelle prossime, affrontando anche lo spinoso caso Pioli. Prima di iniziare a parlare di Milan, ha voluto complimentarsi con gli avversari: “innanzitutto facciamo i complimenti all’Inter, avremmo voluto essere noi”.

Gli obiettivi

Furlani non fa drammi e chiarisce l’obiettivo della società: programmare la prossima stagione. Ai microfoni di DAZN afferma infatti che il Club è già “al lavoro per la prossima stagione per far sì che sia una stagione di successo. Non parlerei di emozioni ora, abbiamo ancora 5 partite di questo campionato. Siamo ancora secondi e vorremmo tenerci questo secondo posto, siamo ancora focalizzati su queste prossime partite”. Le premesse a inizio stagione erano certamente altre, c’erano ambizioni di vincere, così come ammesso da Furlani: “Facciamo la squadra per vincere, questo era l’obiettivo l’estate scorsa e lo è anche questa estate. Non si riesce sempre a vincere. Abbiamo fatto una grande rivoluzione della rosa l’estate scorsa, quest’anno sarà un lavoro più leggero. L’obiettivo è sempre quello”.

Futuro del Milan e di Pioli

I tifosi del Milan, dopo la cocente sconfitta, desiderano avere risposte sul futuro, sia societario che in merito all’allenatore. Giorgio Furlani ha voluto fare chiarezza affermando che “cercheremo di fare una squadra sempre più competitiva”. In merito al futuro di Pioli invece ha dichiarato che “l’allenatore del Milan è Stefano Pioli, confermo questa cosa. Siamo concentrati sul finire bene la stagione. Per come lavoriamo noi sulla parte sportiva le persone che riportano a Gerry Cardinale sono Moncada, Ibrahimovic ed io. Sono queste le persone che riportano a Gerry, con lui che prende sempre la decisione finale”.

Nottingham Forest have demanded the audio between officials from Sunday’s defeat at Everton be released publicly.

Meanwhile, the Football Association has asked Forest, manager Nuno Espirito Santo, defender Neco Williams and analyst Mark Clattenburg for their observations as a result of their post-match comments.

Forest were furious after three penalty claims were rejected in the 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park, which kept them just a point above the Premier League relegation zone.

It sparked an angry post on the club’s X account where they said they were “considering their options” over “extremely poor” refereeing decisions.

Yet, despite raising some concerns with referees’ body the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) last week, the club did not ask for Stuart Attwell to be taken off video assistant referee duties for their match, BBC Sport has been told.

The club said they had “warned” the PGMOL “the VAR is a Luton fan but they didn’t change him”.

A statement, released on Monday afternoon, read: “Nottingham Forest has today submitted a formal request to the PGMOL to release into the public domain the audio recordings between officials during yesterday’s match against Everton at Goodison Park.

“The club has requested this be shared for three key match incidents – Ashley Young’s challenge on Giovanni Reyna (24th minute), Ashley Young’s handball (44th minute) and Ashley Young’s challenge on Callum Hudson-Odoi (56th minute).

“We firmly advocate for the broader football community and supporters to have access to the audio and transcript for full transparency, ensuring the integrity of our sport is upheld.”

It follows Liverpool’s similar request when Luis Diaz’s goal was incorrectly disallowed in their 2-1 defeat at Tottenham in September.

The Premier League said in a statement that it was “extremely disappointed” by Forest’s social media post.

It added: “It is never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials, and the nature of these comments means the Premier League will also be investigating the matter in relation to the League’s rules.”

Manager Nuno told BBC Sport that Forest “feel they are taking away things from us so it’s difficult”, while Williams said “top-six sides would get all three penalties”.

Forest released another statement later on Monday on X, acknowledging that they “know match officials do not allow outside factors to influence their decision-making”.

However, the club also called for “greater transparency around PGMOL appointments to further protect the game’s reputation”.

The statement added: “This is not about individuals but rather how the integrity of the game is seen.

“Referees are required to declare their ‘allegiances’ to PGMOL to avoid any perceived conflict or harm to the game’s reputation for integrity.

“However, it is clear PGMOL must amend its rule on allegiances to account for contextual rivalries in the league table, not just local rivalries. This is currently not within the criteria but should be.”

Forest said that “any move which boosts confidence in the system should be properly considered” given “the widespread and ongoing concerns” of fans, managers and pundits around the league around VAR decisions.

What were the contentious decisions?

Forest were frustrated about three penalty claims, all involving Everton defender Ashley Young.

The club felt he caught the back of Gio Reyna’s boot in attempting to make a tackle when the game was goalless before a Callum Hudson-Odoi cross struck Young on the arm late in the first half.

The third incident happened after the interval as Young challenged Hudson-Odoi from behind but the officials ruled he had won the ball cleanly.

Forest posted on X after the game: “Three extremely poor decisions – three penalties not given – which we simply cannot accept.

“Our patience has been tested multiple times.”

After a series of what they saw as decisions against them, Forest hired former referee Clattenburg as their referee analyst.

And the retired official wrote a column in the Mail on Sunday in which he said Forest had been “left feeling victimised after another defeat in which zero big decisions went their way”.

On Monday, Young appeared to make light of the situation in a post on X writing “Old Skool Tunes For Today” with a picture of him playing the Justin Timberlake song ‘Cry Me A River’.

The result leaves Forest 17th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone with four games remaining.

Forest’s appeal against their four-point punishment for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR) will be heard on Wednesday, 24 April.
