Turned down its own elite engineer
Fruity tax-dodger Apple has found itself in the middle of an age discrimination row after it turned down a 54-year-old to work as one of its pixies at an Apple store.
The only problem was that the bloke they turned down was JK Scheinberg, an engineer who spent 21 years working at Apple and is most famous for persuading Steve Jobs to move the Mac from PowerPC to Intel in 2005. Scheinberg also has mates in the industry and happens to have fixed the PC of a New York Times reporter.
Scheinberg happened to have been feeling a bit restless after retiring and thought with all his skills he would be great fit for a position at an Apple store Genius Bar. He was twice as old as anyone else at the group interview and while he interviewed well, he never heard back.
It is hard to see anyone who is more qualified to fix Apple gear than Scheinberg, well other than Woz, but judging by Apple’s ageist hiring policy he wouldn’t get a job either. Apple seems keener on hiring spotty 20 somethings who don’t actually know much. Scheinberg appears pretty relaxed about his former employers but this sort of thing is not really good for Apple’s reputation.
Of course maybe Apple is trying to forget Scheinberg. His wife hit the news recently when she told the press how after her husband installed his version of the Apple operating system onto a Sony Vaio PC. Jobs’ Mob went nuts.
As Project Marklar Suddenly, the home office had to be reconfigured to meet Apple security standards and Scheinberg was told to make his wife forget that the project was happen. Scheinberg pointed out that his wife not only knew about the project, she came up with the name.
The New York Times has used it as a case study of ageism in the IT industry. Normally that particular rag is cheering Apple, so the problem must be bad.

Il progetto Open Office, dal 2011 conosciuto come Apache OpenOffice, potrebbe chiudere i battenti perché mancano gli sviluppatori che possano dare continuità allo sviluppo della suite office “alternativa”.
I responsabili del progetto si sono detti particolarmente preoccupati perché non si trovano sviluppatori che si dedichino allo sviluppo del software che una volta era la prima valida alternativa – peraltro distribuita come software libero e opensource – a Microsoft Office.
La preoccupazione è adesso soprattutto per ciò che riguarda la risoluzione dei problemi di sicurezza.
Stando alle parole di Dennis Hamilton, vice presidente di Apache OpenOffice, al momento si contano sulle dita delle mani le persone che si stanno dedicando attivamente allo sviluppo del progetto. Come dire: OpenOffice rischia seriamente la chiusura.
Negli ultimi anni è verificata una vera e propria emorragia di sviluppatori che hanno abbandonato OpenOffice per lavorare su LibreOffice.
Una nutrita schiera di sviluppatori di OpenOffice aveva tempo fa abbandonato il progetto quando passò nelle mani di Oracle. Non sembrò opportuno che un progetto opensource di primo piano passasse in gestione ad un’azienda del calibro di Oracle, largamente impegnata nel closed source.
“The Document Foundation” (TDF), organizzazione che fu creata da un folto numero di ex sviluppatori di OpenOffice, chiese ad Oracle di poter acquisire, a titolo gratuito e definitivo, il conosciuto marchio della suite opensource. Ricevendo picche, LibreOffice crebbe come progetto autonomo su un binario completamente differente rispetto a OpenOffice (che venne poi donato da Oracle alla Apache Software Foundation).
Si pensi che LibreOffice ha beneficiato di 14 aggiornamenti solo nel 2015 mentre nello stesso anno OpenOffice ha ricevuto solo un aggiornamento (l’ultima versione è la 4.1.2 di ottobre).
L’opzione dello smantellamento del progetto Apache OpenOffice è dunque ormai sul piatto: se essa si concretizzasse, il codice sorgente verrebbe lasciato nelle mani di chiunque fosse interessato ad usarlo mentre le varie mailing list, il blog, gli account Twitter e Facebook verrebbero chiusi.
Verrebbe lasciato attivo solamente un indirizzo e-mail dove accogliere eventuali richieste di utilizzo del brand OpenOffice.
Nonostante il successo di LibreOffice, OpenOffice è utilizzato ancora da molti utenti (nel 2015 è stato scaricato da 29 milioni di utenti). Il viale del tramonto sembra però ormai imboccato.
