China might stall Broadcom and Qualcomm merger talks

Author: edfu777 [AT] hotmail [DOT] com (Nick Farrell) Fudzilla.com – Home

Might prevent its own chip moves

A potential mega-merger between chipmaker Broadcom and Qualcomm is pretty unlikely to get much support from the Chinese authorities.

This week Qualcomm warned that the deal was never going to get the nod from antitrust regulators and it seems that Chinese antitrust lawyers agree.

For those who came in late, Broadcom made an unsolicited bid to buy Qualcomm for $ 103 billion aimed at creating a $ 200 billion plus behemoth.

But it seems unlikely that the Chinese will play ball unless the new company promises to give it huge amounts of technology so that it can set up its own rivals.

Wendy Yan, Shanghai-based partner at law firm Faegre Baker Daniels, told Reuters that chips are a critical industry for China and Qualcomm has been fined by the Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) before so it’s on its radar.

Qualcomm agreed to pay a record fine of $ 975 million in China in 2015 to end a probe into anti-competitive practices related to so called “double dipping” by billing Chinese customers patent royalty fees in addition to charging for the chips.

China wants to develop its own semiconductor industry under local champions such as Tsinghua Unigroup and Fujian Grand Chip Investment to help cut reliance on global operators including Qualcomm and Samsung and Intel.

China chipmaker rivals could also raise concerns about the deal, he added, putting pressure on Mofcom’s Anti-Monopoly Bureau to act to stop it happening.

Another spanner in the works is that Broadcom is trying to buy Brocade Communications and Qualcomm has NXP Semiconductors.

The Chinese approved the Brocade acquisition with conditions earlier this year with after a five month investigation.

But blocking deals would be unusual for Chinese regulators, especially when Chinese companies were not directly involved. Normally it would demand sell-offs and in this case a way for its own companies to get technology to compete.

Lian Li Announces Alpha Series Mid-Tower Chassis: Tempered Glass Panels Plus RGB

Author: Joe Shields AnandTech

Lian-Li has announced the release of a new series of cases, the Alpha series. The Alpha line of cases brings users steel internal frame and tempered glass surfaces allowing for a better look at what is going on inside the Mid-Tower chassis. The Alpha 330 has a total of three glass panels while the Alpha 550 RGB comes with all four sides made of tempered glass. New to Lian-Li cases are integrating RGB LEDs. The 550 RGB uses BORA 120mm RGB LED fans along with a hand-held RF remote for control over the fans and included RGB accent lighting. Both chassis offer flexible configurations for both air cooling and water cooled systems with a wide range of radiator support; up to 420mm x 140mm on the front and an additional up to 360mm radiator on top.

The Alpha series cases use SECC steel structure and tempered glass panels instead of their typical brushed aluminum. The glass gives the cases a high-end, clean appearance. The tempered glass panels have black edges framing out the front of the case where the fans are, as well as the side of the case where all the hardware will be shown off. The right panel has two levels of transparency which helps clean the look up by hiding wires on the darked out bottom and the innards more visible up top.

Dust filters are found on both the top (magnetic) and bottom (slide out) of the case helping keep the internals clean. The fans in the front are mounted to a fan/radiator rack for easier installation, maintenance, and removal. Cable management is uniquely handled by a hinged panel on the back covering a channel for cable routing. Front Panel connectivity consists of a power button, two USB 3.0 ports, audio jacks, as well as the latest USB Type-C port, all hidden behind a flip-down panel at top front part of the case on the 550 RGB while the 330’s controls are exposed. Both the 330 and 550 have support for a vertically oriented graphics cards, up to 400mm in length, to better display the hardware through the glass panels.

Internally, both Alpha Series cases have seven drive bays; two 3.5-inch and five 2.5-inch mounting areas; drive cages and mounts on the back of the motherboard panel. The detachable front panel will hold 3x120mm fans, the top 3×120/140mm and one 120mm fan on the rear. The 330 includes a single 120mm fan on the rear while the 550 RGB includes the three BORA120 RGB fans on the front, a (non-RGB) 120mm on the rear, and the RF remote control. The 550 also integrates an RGB strip below the front panel, also controlled by the remote. Motherboard support ranges from Mini-ITX up to E-ATX and CPU heatsink support is up to 170mm tall. The Power supply is hidden under a cover on the bottom with the chassis supporting up to 250mm long units.

Titan Xp Collector’s Edition is Star Wars tribute

Author: bobo [AT] fudzilla [DOT] com (Slobodan Simic) Fudzilla.com – Home

Two different versions

Nvidia has piqued a lot of interest by teasing the new Titan Xp Collector’s Edition but it appears that this is only a tribute to Star Wars as it will be available in the Jedi Order and the Galactic Empire version with standard clocks.

As noted, both versions of the Nvidia Titan Xp Collector’s Edition are based on the same Nvidia Pascal GP102 GPU with 3,840 Cuda cores, 1582MHz GPU Boost clock and 12GB of 11.4Gbps clocked GDDR5X memory on a 384-bit memory interface.

Both versions have different cooler die-cast aluminum shrouds with matching Galactic Empire and Jedi Order design, that should emulate the design of lightsabres, as well as matching red and green LED color, Jedi Order or Galactic Empire logos and special backplate.

While these are nothing special to write home about, they will certainly find their buyers, especially with the recent launch of Star Wars Battlefront 2 game and the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie.

The new Star Wars-themed Titan Xp Collector’s Edition should be available for pre-order tomorrow with a price set at US $ 1199.99/£1149. Those running Nvidia’s Geforce Experience will also get an exclusive pre-order access directly from Nvidia’s store.

File manager Android: Google rilascia Files Go, ecco come funziona

Author: IlSoftware.it
