Intel drones at Super Bowl were not live

Intel simply cannot get a break it seems. The company faked drones flying in the super bowl 51 and in reality, the whole Lady Gaga Intel and Pepsi logo parade was recorded a week earlier. The FAA would not allow 300 drones to fly over the heads of tens of thousands of people. 

Intel told the Verge that the Federal Aviation Administration forbids drones from flying within a 34.5 mile radius of the NRG Stadium.

During Super Bowl, it looked like 300 Intel powered drones made a USA flag, Pepsi logo, stars and finally an Intel logo. In reality, it was all pre-recorded and of course no one wants to admit that it would be very embarrassing to have these drones fail in front of the live audience.  

Late last year the company even had 500 drones flying synchronously which looks like a nice achievement. The company desperately wants you to like and want drones as it really needs to be successful in IoT products as it didn’t do a great job in building a successful smartphone SoC.  

Intel Shooting Start drones are equipped with four rotors, weigh 280 grams and can fly up to 20 minutes. They come equipped with LED lights that can shine in four billion colors.  There is no doubt that the flying drones look cool but it cost millions to make the Super Bowl parade work, an investment that is going to be really hard to monetize.

Intel is losing executives left and right and many of the people who helped Intel’s PC business unit to get where it is today left the company. Intel is about to get the competition from its old rival AMD and the company wants to talk about flying LED machines that it calls drones. Kim Stevenson, Doug Davis, Former Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s IoT (Internet of Things) Group and Kirk Skaugen, Intel’s senior vice president and general manager of the Client Computing Group (CCG) are among a few top managers that left Intel in the last few quarters. 

Drones will certainly have its place in the market but the ones that Intel is showing around have very limited used case scenario. They should probably get back to its basics and try to fix whatever is wrong with 10nm manufacturing and have the Cannonlake 10nm products ready.

ASUS ZenFone 3S Max presentato ufficialmente

Asus ha presentato qualche settimana fa al CES di Las Vegas l’interessante Zenfone 3 Zoom che dovrebbe arrivare proprio durante il mese in corso. Invece, di questo smartphone si sono perse le tracce e la società continua a lanciare nuovi modelli: oggi è il turno di ASUS ZenFone 3S Max.

Non sappiamo se e quando il dispositivo sarà commercializzato ufficialmente in Italia, anche perché questo smartphone andrebbe a migliorare notevolmente lo Zenfone 3 Max che si trova online tra i 150 e i 200 euro.

ASUS ZenFone 3S Max sarà disponibile all’acquisto  in India al prezzo di 14.999 Rupie, quindi poco più di 200 euro al cambio. Vedremo se Asus deciderà lo stesso di portare il dispositivo in Italia. I miglioramenti tecnici d’altronde ci sono e riguardano soprattutto la batteria. Quest’ultima è di ben 5000mAh (è di 4130 mAh sull’attuale Zenfone 3 Max) e si pone come obiettivo quello di durare fino a 3 giorni con una singola carica.

Asus promette 18 ore di riproduzione video continua, 25 ore di navigazione web Wi-Fi, 28 di autonomia in conversazione 3G, o 34 giorni in stand-by. Rispetto all’originale Zenfone 3 Max qui troviamo anche la presenza di Android 7.0 Nougat a bordo.

Queste sono le specifiche tecniche di Asus Zenfone 3S Max:

  • display da 5,2″ con risoluzione HD 1280 x 720p
  • processore Mediatek MT6750 octa core da 1,5 GHz
  • 3 GB di RAM
  • 32 GB di storage espandibile tramite microSD
  • fotocamera posteriore da 13 MP

  • Android 7.0 Nougat con ZenUI 3.0. 

Considerato che si tratta di un “power phone”, questo ASUS ZenFone 3S Max è un upgrade interessante di Zenfone 3 Max. Ma per sapere se arriverà in Italia dovremo attendere news da Asus.

Average iPhone selling price was $695

Last week Apple announced that the average selling price of the iPhones jumped to $ 695, proving once again that Jobs was right about people not wanting a larger phone. 

The price is actually only $ 4 higher than the Average Selling Price (ASP) in the same quarter year but it still sounds like an incredibly lot of money for a phone. The reason behind such a successful business is the fact that more and more people are going after the iPhone 7 Plus, the larger version of the phone.

Another reason behind such a high margin and average selling price is the fact that most people will go for the second largest storage option which is today 128GB and paying Apple 100 Euro or $ for additional storage. These days most people struggle with 32GB let alone 16GB and Apple of course offers 32GB, 128GB and 256GB.

Tim Cook the CEO of Apple confirmed that the 7 Plus made up a “higher portion of new product mix than we’ve ever seen with Plus models in the past“.

This probably has to do with the fact that people in their 60s are starting to develop eye sight problems and that the traditional phone screen ends up too small for them. These people usually have the money to afford the overpriced phone too. Jobs stacked around with 3.5 inch screen for too long and it took Apple forever to get to 4 inch and years later to the current 4.7 inch scene size. Of course, millions of people wanted a larger phone, which created a space for the success of the iPhone 6 and 7 Plus.  

Even though many people are not happy with its level of innovation, Apple still managed to sell a total of 78.3 million units and reported $ 54 billion in revenue.

The pressure is on as the growth in phone market share is highly unlikely for Apple.
