ARM is turning Japanese


£24 billion, I really think so

The British chipmaker, ARM has which has just agreed to be acquired by the Japanese giant SoftBank for £24 billion.

ARM chips are under the bonnet of nearly every major iPhone brand and been instrumental in the mobile revolution.

Last year, 15 billion ARM-designed chips were shipped and installed in devices, and the company’s revenues grew 22 per cent  to £968 million. Its fat profit margins mean a lot of that is translated into profits, which were up 31 per cent to £415m.

The outfit was spun out of the British computer company Acorn in 1990 after developing processors for the BBC Micro. Before SoftBank’s offer it was valued at £17 billion and was the biggest tech outfit in the UK.
SoftBank will keep ARM’s headquarters in Cambridge and has promised to double jobs in the UK over the next five years.

ARM falling into foreign hands will be seen as a shame by advocates of a strong, independent UK tech sector. However, SoftBank has pledged to invest in the company, double headcount in the UK and maintain its Cambridge headquarters

CPU Kaby Lake-X e Skylake-X su socket LGA-2066 nel 2017

Intel ha recentemente posto in commercio una nuova linea di processori Broadwell-E ad alto rendimento. I quattro modelli, tuttavia, utilizzano il chipset X99 e come socket LGA-2011v3, pensato più come soluzione di fascia elevata per i PC domestici che per quelli destinati ad un pubblico professionale.

Per il prossimo futuro, Intel ha in serbo alcune novità. Gli utenti più evoluti e coloro che sono interessati a PC “top di gamma”, avranno a disposizione il nuovo socket LGA-2066. La piattaforma sulla quale “poggia” (Basin Falls X) dovrebbe essere portata al debutto durante l’estate 2017 insieme con i processori Kaby Lake X e Skylake-X.

Il primo sarà un modesto quad-core con 16 piste PCIe e TDP di 112 W, capace di supportare memorie DDR4-2400 e DDR4-2666.

Skylake-X, invece, rappresenterà un’evoluzione di Broadwell-E pur non discostandosi molto dalle caratteristiche di queste CPU. Il processore sarà comunque più performante grazie alle 44 piste PCIe 3.0 (anziché le 40 utilizzate nei Broadwell-E).
Il TDP rimarrà pari a 140 W, verrà confermato il supporto Turbo Boost 3.0 e Skylake-X supporterà memorie DDR4 a 2400 e 2666 MHz four-channel.

Per entrambe le serie di processori, il chipset sarà KBL PCH-X. Per quanto riguarda Skylake-X, i modelli presentati da Intel integreranno da sei a dieci core fisici.

La società di Santa Clara dovrebbe avviare la produzione dei nuovi processori entro agosto-settembre 2017.

Pokemon Go: la polizia del New Hampshire usa la meccanica dei personaggi rari per catturare i latitanti

La polizia del New Hampshire sta usando Pokemon Go nel tentativo di attirare i latitanti e catturarli. Con il seguente post su Facebook, infatti, si invitano le persone che fanno parte di una lista a far visita alla questura della città di Manchester. Qui, infatti, sarebbe stato ritrovato un Pokemon raro, un Charizard.

La lista comprendeva i nomi di circa 500 latitanti che il dipartimento non è riuscito a localizzare fino a questo momento. Le apparizioni dei Pokemon rari possono costituire l’ennesimo problema in termini di ordine pubblico provocato dal virale videogioco di Nintendo e Niantic, come conferma il seguente video che mostra il paradossale caso di euforia che si è venuto a creare al Central Park di New York dove è stato individuato un Vaporeon molto raro.

Casi simili sono stati segnalati in altre importanti città in tutto il mondo, evidenziando come Nintendo sia riuscita ancora una volta a fare breccia nel cuore degli appassionati, facendo leva su uno dei franchise più amati tra quelli a sua disposizione.

Molti, però, stanno esprimendo preoccupazione sulle modalità con cui viene sfruttata l’app per attirare l’attenzione dei giocatori verso luoghi sensibili, che possono essere non sicuri o inappropriati. Altri si sono espressi su ciò che potrebbe significare tutto questo in termini di privacy degli utenti.

Abbiamo riferito nei giorni scorsi come nel Missouri alcuni malintenzionati abbiano usato Pokemon Go per rapinare i giocatori. Ma al momento la polizia del New Hampshire non è riuscita a ingannare neanche uno dei latitanti presenti nella lista, in compenso, come potete vedere voi stessi, quel post su Facebook ha riscosso molto successo con oltre 27 mila “like”.

Softbank Acquires ARM in 24B GBP Deal

While we normally focus on the technology, to have a holistic understanding of the industry it’s necessary to see the business side as well. While ARM has been an independent company for some time now, today Softbank has leveraged the fall in the value of the British Pound to buy ARM Holdings plc, the company responsible for the ARM ISA, ARM Cortex CPUs and MCUs, Mali GPUs, and numerous other IP blocks that are often used in SoCs today. If you’ve followed our coverage, this isn’t really a surprise, but Softbank is primarily a telecom and internet-centric company with relatively little focus on CMOS chip design.

ARM is valued at 11.89 GBP per share, so to be bought out at 17 GBP per share is a fairly significant premium above the market rate. Looking at past investments it seems that Softbank is no stranger to these kinds of plays but it’s not clear whether Softbank will take a hands-on approach to managing the company or mostly leave ARM to its devices. One option is that they favor a more hands-off approach and ARM is primarily a financial investment for Softbank. It remains to be seen what kind of effect this will have, but the financial backing of a major Japanese conglomerate would likely allow for ARM to devote additional time and resources to designing new architectures to better target high performance mobile and server applications which could impact the industry significantly to ARM’s benefit.

The other option is if Softbank takes a much more hands-on approach to managing ARM, which could be interesting if it helps root out whatever normalized deviance exists in management or engineering at ARM, but could also completely destroy the company if a poor approach is taken. Of course, there’s no way to know what path Softbank will take here, but regardless it’ll be an interesting few years in the semiconductor space.

Microsoft Pix arriverà presto su iOS

Microsoft Pix è un’applicazione fotocamera molto intelligente, in grado di migliorare la foto automaticamente dopo lo scatto. Ebbene, questa app, a breve arriverà sul sistema operativo di Apple.

Si tratta di un’applicazione utile sia per chi si vuole cimentare nella fotografia con gli smartphone, ma anche per gli utenti più esperti che vogliono andare a cambiare diversi settaggi. Infatti, con Microsoft Pix, è possibile andare ad incidere sull’otturatore, modificare l’ISO e l’esposizione. Ovviamente per i meno specializzati tutti queste impostazioni, all’apertura dell’app saranno tutti impostati in maniera automatica.

Un’altra caratteristica interessante è l’ottimizzazione sulla messa a fuoco, che dovrebbe essere più rapida rispetto ad altre app. Un’altra funzione particolare dell’applicazione e che essa è in grado di capire se stiamo riprendendo un soggetto in movimento, trasformando lo scatto in un video in loop, molto simile, quindi, alle Live Photo degli smartphone Apple. La particolarità di Microsoft Pix è che registrerà video solamente quando ci sarà un reale movimento.

Al momento, l’applicazione non è ancora disponibile sull’App Store e non sappiamo quando dovrebbe essere rilasciata, anche se ipotizziamo di trovarla entro due settimane.
