The AnandTech Podcast, Episode 37: IDF 2016, Alloy, Joule, Broxton, and AMD Zen

Today’s podcast covers the show known as the Intel Developer Forum, or IDF for short. IDF is an annual event focusing on new Intel technologies and product visions, showcasing what is new from small maker-like ‘Internet of Things’ devices all the way up to server platforms and everything in-between. Ian and Ryan were at the show, with plenty of meetings on tap. We found some time to put our thoughts on the announcements in a microphone.

‘It’s just amazing’: Tulisa Contostavlos talks sensational comeback as she releases surprise new tune

The N-Dubz star is back after a pretty rough few years

Tulisa Contostavlos has just kicked off her comeback by dropping her new single – and you might just recognise it.

The 28-year-old singer is back after a difficult few years with a remake of classic 90s dance hit Sweet Like Chocolate and has released a teaser clip ahead of the tune’s release on Friday.

Former N-Dubz star Tulisa is clearly excited to be making music again and admits she chose to reinvent this old track for a reason.

‘Thinking back to when I was 11 years old listening to that song, and to have come into this industry at the age of 17, thirteen years or something ridiculous like that, it’s just amazing to remake and rewrite a song like that,’ she explains.

Tulisa Contostavlos divides fans with ‘unrecognisable’ selfie

‘It feels like it’s a good way to come back after the s*** for two years. I’m still here; it’s like a celebration – a decade of Tulisa. It’s an amazing feeling.’

Tulisa’s return to the music world comes after she went through a very tough time in recent years following a court case in 2014 over a drugs sting which was eventually thrown out of court.

She was then arrested for drink-driving last year and later given a ban from driving for 15 months.

Now Tulisa is clearly in a good place and feels ready to make a comeback this time around after briefly returning with the single Living Without You in 2014.

‘I feel like I’ve relaxed, this time around for the comeback,’ she tells Notion. ‘People get to see a different side to me where I feel a lot more chilled out and more open, and less scared.

‘I’m a lot more relaxed and I think that has to do with being a lot more at peace with myself, more relaxed with who I am.

‘I know it’s really clichéd to talk about self-love but after the few years that I’ve had, I can actually say yes to an extent, I am a lot more at ease with myself and comfortable in my own skin.’

AMD sees VR and AR as a good bet

Might pull its nadgers out of the fire

AMD is talking about how it is life might be becoming easier thanks to the rise of VR.

Chatting to the Orlando Sentinel vice president for AMD’s Radeon Technologies Group Joe Cox said that there was a big resurgence in virtual reality.

“Virtual reality is exciting because it’s new and there is an excitement around it right now. But it’s just now in its infancy and has a long road ahead for it.”

Its hope is that the company will pick up on the back of the developing VR market. It is not the only one which is making this claim. Bean counters for Mercury Research think that AMD has 12.3 percent of the graphics processor market, up from 11.8 percent the prior quarter. That was the first jump since the first quarter of 2012.

The paper quoted Richard Terrell, a virtual reality developer who think’s AMD’s new graphics processors enhance its ability to compete in virtual reality.

“This is one of the key things that puts them in a good position for the next generation of VR technology that is about to hit us. Looking at the history of AMD, the company is well suited for it. Intel hasn’t had this kind of competition in a while,” he said

Growing competition in virtual reality means more opportunity for AMD which has seen its shares increase to $ 7.68. They hit a more than 40-year low of $ 1.61 per share on July 27, 2015.

The Orlando office works heavily on the Radeon RX 480 processor, which one recent review called “the best $ 200 GPU you can buy today.”

Cox said he expects the group to keep enhancing its effect on the company’s overall performance.

“We need to keep moving the graphics architecture and double its performance and power. Augmented reality processors, they need to be extremely low power and high performance. The goal is more pixels, less wattage.”
