I started wearing a smart fitness watch recently so I could track some of my running more easily than by carrying my iPhone. Not that I am a world class runner by any means. Let me be clear. I am not a runner like the people I admire who do marathons and half-marathons. I really just jog and do the occasional 5k.
And now that I’ve had my watch for a while I’ve found out just how smart it really is. Not only does it track my meagre short-distance runs – distance, speed, pace, heart rate etc., all the things you’d expect. It also tracks my sleep patterns so I know how much sleep I am getting, and even how much deep sleep versus light sleep I get. It tracks my steps each day and gives me goals that vary based on my history for each day of the week. More on weekends when I’m more active, less during the week when I’m slaving away at my desk all day. I get notices and alerts for mail and phone calls. It even tells me to get up and walk around for just a few minutes throughout the day to avoid prolonged inactivity, an unhealthy behavior that is very simply remedied, as long as I pay attention to that little buzzing signal on my wrist.
Digital mobile technologies like this are becoming ubiquitous and they can be found everywhere these days. They make us more aware of our daily habits and routines in ways that help us to be better. To be healthier. To sleep better. To be more aware of things so we can make more informed choices and decisions.
And the same thing is happening in the resources industry. Despite the advances of autonomous vehicles and remote operations centers, you still need boots on the ground to perform a huge amount of the work at an actual mine site. And mobile digital technologies are helping workers perform it more safely and more efficiently.
Take augmented reality for example (AR). You might have someone inspecting a machine in a very remote part of an operation. By using a tablet with a special AR app, the technician can simply view it through the camera and get connected to it in real-time. Superimposed on the screen you get all the normal operating parameters
as well as any alerts or warnings if something is out of spec. Then it can bring up the necessary diagnostic procedures in order to make any immediate adjustments to get everything back into spec. This video on Augmented Operator Advisor demonstrates exactly how it works.

Dopo l’annuncio dell’arrivo ufficiale di YouTube Music potrebbe sembrare che nell’ambito dello streaming musicale non ci sia più spazio per nessuno, ma i francesi di Qobuz non sono d’accordo e si presentano anch’essi ufficialmente nel nostro mercato. A molti il nome potrebbe risultare sconosciuto, ma la società francese è nel settore della musica scaricabile e in streaming dal 2007 e in questi anni abbiamo visto il suo nome comparire durante importanti presentazioni di nomi dell’audio come Sony.
Da sempre la compagnia ha puntato sulla qualità per contraddistinguersi nel panorama dei servizi di streaming musicale, declinata sia come qualità dell’audio (sia in download sia in streaming) sia sul fronte del catalogo. È un servizio nato dapprima attorno a un catalogo molto ampio di musica classica, settore dove si trovano molti audiofili disposti a pagare per avere in cambio qualità, e poi si è espanso verso altri settori, jazz, rock classico e musica elettronica. Il catalogo è molto vasto e abbraccia 40 milioni di brani, vantando i diritti sia per le major, che per molte etichette indipendenti. I contenuti sono disponibili in una qualità superiore alla maggior parte delle altre piattaforme: il formato più utilizza è il FLAC a 16Bit/44.1 kHz, simile alla qualità CD: per lo streaming su reti lente è disponibile anche il formato compresso a 320kbps, mentre i dowload possono avvenire anche nei formati Hi-Res 24-bit 96/192kHz. Il catalogo in altissima definizione (24Bit/192 kHz) può contare su di un milione di brani (80.000 album)
Non solo streaming, Qobuz conta molto anche sull’aspetto culturale: produce infatti contenuti editoriali esclusivi, tra cui centinaia di migliaia di recensioni di album, prefazioni sulla discografia degli artisti, ritratti biografici, immagini e video esclusivi. Questa linea editoriale, indipendente ed originale, vuole soddisfare la curiosità degli utenti e nei progetti dell’azienda francese vuole rappresentare un plus unico rispetto ad altre soluzioni.

Si può fruire della musica da dispositivi portatili Android e iOS e da Mac e PC Windows tramite le apposite applicazioni, ma esiste anche il player web. Per chi ha un impianto casalingo di qualità è inoltre possibile utilizzare Qobuz in streaming Hi-Res sui più diffusi sistemi di connessione audio abilitati ChromeCast e DTS Play-Fi. Non manca poi la possibilità di utilizzare Bluetooth, Airplay e DLNA.
I prezzi sono da servizio premium, ma ciò permette a Qobuz, che è un’azienda di piccole dimensioni rispetto agli altri colossi, di basare il suo business model sulle revenue effettive e non sui round finanziamenti, come spesso fanno i servizi che puntano molto sullo streaming gratuito. I profili sono parecchio costosi: quello base in formato compresso mp3 da 320kbps chiede 9,99€ al mese o 99,99€ l’anno, quelll che include lo streaming in FLAC 16bit/44,1kHz 19,99€ mese e 199,99€ anno, mentre i profili in Hi-Res ‘Sublime’ e ‘Sublime+’ hanno costi di 219,99€ e 349,99€ all’anno.
